Good Morning

It is a beautiful day here in Krypton Kentucky. It is finally raining! We have had record heat every day for over a week. We just got the peas up in time, but many other crops were about to fail. Gladly we need this rain. Rain like today where it is just a nice shower all day really makes everything look green and clean.

Spring is Coming

Today I was looking out the kitchen window and saw the most beautiful bird. It was sky blue with a rust chest and white belly. I asked my grandmother what it was and she said she had bird books to look them up in. We looked it up and it is an Eastern Bluebird that is starting it's migration. There was a male and female and we watched them for sometime before they flew away. It was such a special moment for me to look the bird up with my grandmother then watch the birds play.

It Snowed in Krypton Yesterday

Here in Krypton, Kentucky we have only had a dusting of snow all year. Well, about 4:30 in the afternoon yesterday, it started snowing these huge snowflakes. The snowflakes look like someone had torn sheets of paper to let fall. I swear some of the flakes were 3 inches in diameter. It was truly amazing! It snowed like that for about 30 minutes and then was gone. Not a flake left in the air or on the ground. I tried to take a picture but for some reason my camera would not pick up the flakes very well. I did add a picture and a quick movie though for you to see. It was truly amazing.

How Many Days To Spring

Spring is in the air. My grandmother is talking about her Weeping Cherry Tree and how pretty it is. She is 93 and loves to think of spring flowers.

Robert Redford Cake

When I moved back to Krypton I was able to connect with some of my childhood friends. Once of them is Cassie. Cassie is a disabled widow but she can sure bake a cake. She heats her whole house with a coal stove and since it is hard to get large block coal for home use it is a little expensive. There is a program here for people on fixed income that will help them either buy coal or kerosene for a heater. She was able to get 2 tons (which is very little coal) of coal but they made her pay a co-payment for it. Well I paid the co-payment and she baked me a cake. She named some that she makes and the Robert Redford Cake was the one I chose. She didn't have one named Terry Bradshaw or I surely would have chose that.

Anyway Cassie makes her cakes from scratch. She made a chocolate sheet cake from scratch, while the cake was warm she poke holes in it and poured 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, and 1 container of carmel topping and put it in the fridge to cool. Once cool she put a whole tub of cool whip on the top and broke up Butter Finger candy bars on top of that. It is to die for. I have no idea why they call it a Robert Redford Cake.

Krypton Quilt

This unique and beautiful quilt was on display at the Krypton Brethren Church in Krypton Kentucky during "Home Coming" this weekend. Krypton is a small community in Eastern Kentucky where my family is from. My great-aunt made this quilt that shows all of the buildings in Krypton. She has even added the train tracks that go right through our little community.
